Upper cervical care focuses on the top two bones in the neck, known as the atlas and axis. These structures help support the head and protect the brainstem, a key communication center between the brain and the rest of the body.
NUCCA, which stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association, is a highly precise method that uses detailed measurements and gentle corrections to improve alignment in this area. The goal is to reduce unnecessary strain and help the body function more efficiently.
Dr. Allen Harrison provides upper cervical chiropractic care at BEST, helping patients improve alignment, posture, and nervous system function as part of a comprehensive treatment approach. His work focuses on the NUCCA method, a highly specialized form of upper cervical care that uses precise measurements and gentle corrections to support the body’s natural ability to function.
Dr. Harrison earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic, where he developed a passion for NUCCA and became so proficient in the technique that he taught it to fellow chiropractic students while completing his clinical training. Prior to chiropractic school, he studied Exercise Physiology with a minor in Aquatic Therapy at West Virginia University, giving him a strong foundation in human movement and biomechanics.
In 2013, Dr. Harrison founded The Balanced Atlas in San Francisco, where he has helped patients experiencing chronic pain, postural imbalances, and complex neuromuscular conditions through precise upper cervical care.
Working alongside Dr. Chris Chui, Dr. Harrison helps patients whose jaw function, posture, and nervous system health may benefit from a coordinated, interdisciplinary approach to long-term stability.
The position of the head and neck can influence posture, muscle tension, and how the jaw functions.
When this area is under strain, the body may compensate in ways that contribute to:
Not every patient will need this type of care.
When it appears to be relevant, Dr. Chui may incorporate it into a broader treatment plan or coordinate with trusted providers who share the same whole-system philosophy.
The CHUI Method looks at how the jaw, airway, posture, and nervous system influence one another.
Upper cervical care can be one way to reduce strain and improve alignment so other therapies have a stronger foundation to build upon. It is one more tool that may help the body move toward greater balance and stability. Stabilize first. Then integrate.
